What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to the inflammatory condition of the tissues which support the sciatic nerve of the leg. In this condition, the patient suffers from a pain which is experienced in the lower back or lumbar region and runs down to the back of the legs. The pain may be experienced in both the legs or even in one of the legs depending upon individual conditions. This condition is mostly experienced by people after the age of thirty and it keeps on aggravating with the advancement in the age.

What causes Sciatica?

Sciatica may be caused by more than one reason and all of these are mostly physical in nature. It may be caused as a result of incorrect posture.. during sitting, standing or even sleeping. As an instance, sitting in a bent position on the chair for long hours or sleeping in a curved position may lead to sciatica. It may also be caused due to rigidity of the spinal nerve as a result of broken vertebral disc in the spine. Even an injury to the lower back area may also lead to sciatica. Similarly, retrenchment of the piriformis muscle that results in choking of the sciatic nerve located close by may also lead to stimulation of the pain.

Signs and Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica is characterized by a feeling of pain which may run from lower back to the back of legs. This pain is sometimes insensitive or is associated with weakness of muscles.

Sciatica is known as Gridhrasi in Ayurveda. According to ayurvedic conception, Sciatica is mainly caused due to problems in the digestive system. Due to impaired digestion, toxins are produced which get accumulated in the subtle channels of the body after travelling through the blood stream. The main aim of ayurvedic treatment is to cleanse up the digestive system so as to remove toxins from the body. This in turn lets all body parts to perform their functions properly. You may also massage the affected body parts by preparing a mixture of mustard oil, garlic cloves and crushed omum seeds.
