Interstitial cystitis or commonly known as cystitis or the painful bladder syndrome, is an unceasing condition of the bladder. In this condition, the walls of the bladder undergo inflammation due to which the patient feels urgent need for urination which is mostly painful and associated with pelvic discomfort. The wall of the bladder also suffers from irritation and becomes red with the appearance of sores on it. Even some scars appear on the bladder wall and becomes stiff. The urine holding capacity of the bladder also suffers due to cystitis. Sometimes, bleeding from the bladder is also noticed in this condition.

Causes

The major cause for interstitial cystitis is the bacterial infection in the urinary bladder. Other causes include use of a diaphragm by females for contraception, holding of urine for longer time periods and change of urinary catheter. Frequent indulgence in sexual activities, obstruction in any part of the urinary system, and some kidney problems.

Symptoms of Interstitial cystitis

Some of the noticeable symptoms of cystitis are pelvic discomfort, urgent need to urinate, painful urination, pain during sexual intercourse, pain in male sexual organs and pain, pressure and tenderness around the bladder, pelvis and the area amid anus and vagina in females and amid anus and scrotum in males.

Ayurvedic stance

Intensification in Vata and Pitta doshas of the body is responsible for interstitial cystitis. Production of toxins is stimulated due to aggravation of these two doshas. These toxins start accumulating in the bladder, anal area, pelvic region and urethra. It leads to the appearance of symptoms of cystitis.

Diet plan and lifestyle advice for cystitis

It is advised to reduce consumption of food which leads to an irritation in the bladder region. These foods are tea, coffee, alcohol, tomatoes and alcoholic drinks. Intake of artificial sweeteners must also be avoided. Ice creams, deep fried foods, heavy creams, sugar, rich puddings, fat meats and chocolates must also be avoided.

Also exclude gravies and high carbohydrate foods plus citrus fruits and vegetables from your diet plan. Instead fresh milk products, juicy fruits, nuts and green vegetables are preferred in this case.

Avoid smoking also as it also damages the bladder. Carry out some pelvic stretching exercises to enhance functionality and efficiency of the bladder. Keep your stomach free from pressure by wearing loose clothes. Keep away from stress.

Home Remedies

Have watermelon juice to flush out toxins from your body. Alternatively onion juice may also be taken. Even garlic and cabbage prove equally effective in this regard. Drink lots of water as it helps in clearing away all toxins and waste materials from the body. Drink herbal tea prepared from herbs such as usnea, horsetail, or such other herbs that help in reducing swelling and infection of the bladder lining.

Even drinking of a glass of water with baking soda added to it is also beneficial in the treatment of Interstitial Cystitis. It is because baking soda helps in reducing the acidity of urine. As a result, the irritation of bladder lining is also cured automatically.
