Dandruff is a condition of human body under which the dead skin cells on the scalp die out. As a result, layers of dead skin start forming over the scalp and start shedding. Due to shedding of the dead skin, some sort of cracking or peeling of the skin of scalp is normal. This condition happens more often approximately every 2-7 days in those who suffer from the problem of Dandruff. Although it is a physical problem, but it has social as well as psychological aspect as well.
Although shedding of dead skin from the scalp after an interval of around one month is normal for all people however excessive shedding of skin takes place under the dandruff problem. It is caused due to many factors such as exposure of scalp to dust, sunlight, cobwebs, shampoos, some specific fabrics and soaps. Some foods are also known to aggravate the condition of dandruff. These foods mostly include oily, dry, spicy, cold and penetrating foods. Over-activit.. y of the sebaceous glands including sweat glands also leads to the problem of dandruff. Some mental states such as stress, anxiety and depression are also known to increase dandruff. Seasonal changes also lead to dandruff in some cases due to sensitivity of the skin. Frequent cosmetic hair treatments including perms, hair-conditioning, hair coloring, hair curling or hair bonding also make the skin of scalp weak and lead to its shedding in the form of dandruff.
Dandruff is mostly characterized and accompanied by symptoms such as softness of the skin of scalp, dryness of scalp, acne, acidity or indigestion, persistent feeling of itchiness, white flakes on the scalp and redness plus irritation on the skin of the scalp.
Ayurvedic Viewpoint about Dandruff
The dandruff falls under the category of Shodra Roga according to ayurveda. It is caused due to an imbalance in all the three doshas of human body. Vata and Pitta doshas are considered to the chief causes of dandruff. Both these are dry, rough and warm in nature. Due to enhanced level of Vata and Pitta in human body, these lead to formation of impurities known as ama in the body. Deposition of these impurities in the deep tissues of scalp leads to infection of the scalp which appears in the form of Dandruff.
