Definition

Gout is a painful metabolic disorder. In this condition, there is an accumulation of uric acid in the cartilages of the joints. It is accompanied by inflammation in the joints as well. The first line of attack of gout starts from the toe where it causes swelling followed by painful inflammation. This pain, swelling and inflammation then radiates towards ankles, knees, joints of hands and feet, elbow and the wrists.

Causes

Excessive production of uric acid during breakdown of chemicals known as purines and the resultant deposition of this excessive uric acid in the joints of body is the major cause for gout. Under normal conditions, the uric acid is expelled from the body along with urine. But due to some physical abnormalities in the internal system of the body, the uric acid is not eliminated from the body. And it results in the production of crystals which are as sharp as needles. This in turn leads to swel.. ling and inflammation in the joints. Some other causes which may also lead to gout are excessive physical activity, trauma, and suppression of natural urges of the body, constant travelling or waking up in the night.

Symptoms

Common features of gout which confirm its occurrence in the body include redness and swelling in the joints accompanied by tenderness, pain in the joints which normally starts at night, feelings of fever and thirst, pricking pain the joints, changing color of the skin and itchiness and burning sensation.
