Failure of human body to remove the waste materials completely in the form of stools or passing of hard stools is known as Constipation. Although it is a common problem but it needs immediate attention as it may even lead to some other serious problems such as indigestion, piles, lack of appetite, fissures and fistulas. To keep body free from toxic substances and various infections, it is quite important that bowels must be evacuated each day. Otherwise, it may also lead to some gastric problems.
The chief reason behind constipation is an incorrect lifestyle, poor eating habits and imbalanced diet. Lack of fiber-rich foods, insufficient intake of liquids, poor bowel evacuation habits are some other causes of constipation. In addition to this, intake of spicy, oily, heavy, fried or junk foods also lead to indigestion and hence constipation. In terms of ayurveda, constipation is also known as Vibandh. As per ayurvedic viewpoint, Vata Dosha is weakened due to accumulation of undigested food and occult stools in the stomach and the large intestines respectively. This in turn leads to blockage in the digestive pathway. As a result, the movements of bowel are also impaired which ultimately leads to the condition of constipation in human beings.
Diet & Lifestyle changes
To get rid of constipation, you need to make some changes in your diet plan. Have plenty of water in all seasons. Lukewarm water is preferred during cold weather as it paces up the digestion process. Have foods which are rich in fiber such as fruits and vegetables. Have some mild soup in the morning to clear your digestive tract. Always prefer to have whole grains and nuts. Consume flour along with bran in it as it helps in clearing the stomach and hence relieves constipation.
Go for morning and evening walks regularly to ensure proper bowel movements. Keep yourself free from stress, anxiety, depression and such other mental states. To get rid of constipation, have an apple or ripe banana each day. Avoid meats, bread, pizza, pasta, white flour, rice and bread. Always eat food when it is still lukewarm for its easy and proper digestion.
Some Home Remedies
Have lukewarm water with honey mixed to it 3-4 times a day regularly to get rid of constipation. Crush cumin seeds, celery seeds and asafetida to make a mixture. Take half teaspoon of this mixture 15 minutes prior to meals two times in a day. Similarly, a mixture of powdered black pepper, black salt, dried ginger root and long pepper may be taken at bedtime with lukewarm water. It helps in evacuation of bowel in the morning.
